Duke basketball rumors: Insider tabs Blue Devils as likely John Blackwell landing spot

With the Duke basketball team expecting some returns from players in the program from this past season, the school is also looking to add some impact players from the transfer portal. As Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer has already been getting wins in the transfer portal, the next one could also be huge in the form of John Blackwell.

The Wisconsin Badger appears to be transferring, being listed by On3 Sports’ Joe Tipton as “one of the top available guards in the portal.” He would have a column predicting where each big transfer portal target could be going, with his explanation on Blackwell going to the Blue Devils, which he puts at “medium” for his confidence level.

“After visiting UCLA last week, Duke will host the former Badgers standout on Monday, and he will then take a trip to Louisville on Tuesday,” Tipton wrote.

“Jon Scheyer has predominantly recruited high school players, but has made it a priority this offseason to add older, experienced players to pair with the top freshmen. I like where the Blue Devils stand with Blackwell, but this recruitment certainly isn’t over,” Tipton continued.

The Duke basketball program is one of John Blackwell’s top choices

Last season, the guard averaged 19,1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, while shooting 43 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc. Earning All-Big Ten Third Team honors and standing at six-foot, four inches, Blackwell is visiting the Duke basketball program on Monday, with the university being one of his top choices.

“After taking an official visit to UCLA on Tuesday, the star transfer tells On3 he will visit Duke on Monday and also plans to visit Louisville later in the week. Blackwell announced a top six last week that included UCLA, Duke, Louisville, Arizona, Alabama, and Illinois,” Tipton wrote.

At any rate, it remains to be seen if Blackwell ends up going to the Blue Devils, as the program looks to further improve after finishing with a 35-3 total record, losing in the Elite Eight to the UConn Huskies in the national tournament.
