Drew Allar has an interesting connection to former Steelers QB
With the 2026 NFL Draft in the books for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team now prepares for the upcoming season and looks at the rookies they picked up. As the Steelers picked Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the third round, the Nittany Lions product does have an interesting connection already with the franchise.
While Allar attended Penn State, his father was also a football player, but a tight end from Eastern Michigan in 1995 and 1996, as he caught passes at the time from quarterback Charlie Batch. To Pittsburgh fans, that name sounds familiar as he was a quarterback for the team from 2002 to 2012, as Batch spoke about the connection to Allar to Kay Adams on “Up & Adams.”
“It was special because Kevin’s a good friend of mine,” Batch said. “30 years ago, we were playing college football together. Number 87 running down the field at Rynearson Stadium at Eastern Michigan University. So it was truly special.”
“To play with him, but to also see it come full circle for me,” Batch continued. “I haven’t seen Drew since he was a little kid. So, when I saw him for the first time the day after he got selected, I’m looking at him like, ‘Wow, I’m looking up at this guy.’ He’s every bit of 6-5, 6-6. But it was truly special because I consider them family. Coming to Pittsburgh, it’s a great situation for him because he knows he has an extended family that he can lean upon once he’s in Pittsburgh.”

Batch would say that he didn’t tell Steelers general manager Omar Khan about the connection, which could have persuaded the selection. At any rate, Allar looks to cement himself that he belongs with the Steelers in his rookie season.
