Donald Trump urges MLB to implement a salary cap

President Donald Trump said he believes that Major League Baseball needs to implement a salary cap. He was asked a question as he was leaving a press conference about the state of baseball as the sport approaches the conclusion of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. The owners and the Major League Baseball Players Association are in the extremely early stages of attempting to work out a new agreement.

Trump seemed surprised that MLB does not have a salary cap at this point, asking if they “sort of ” had one. He was informed of the current luxury tax that is implemented when teams exceed certain levels of spending, but that did not impress him.

Trump believes the owners should implement a salary cap. “If you don’t have a salary cap, you don’t have a sport,” the President said. “They had a chance to implement one a long time ago but they blew it.”

He went on to say that when it comes to sports, he has great insight. “I know so much about sports,” Trump said.

Many are expecting a potential work stoppage in 2027 as the two sides go to the negotiating table. The Players Association has been adamant about refusing to have a salary cap for decades, while owners will attempt to negotiate one as the two sides get together to discuss the next CBA.

Major League Baseball appears to have become a case of the haves and have nots, as teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays appear to have more money to spend than a majority of the remaining teams.
