Donald Trump breaks silence on Iran’s FIFA World Cup confirmation
With just weeks left for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Iran has finally found its spot in the 2026 World Cup. With a temporary ceasefire in place between the USA and Iran, the relationship between the two countries seemed tense after Israel and the USA’s joint attack on Iran. However, with the tournament set to begin on Jun.11, 2026, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed Iran’s spot.
“Let me start at the outset by confirming straight away, for those who maybe want to say something else or write something else, that, of course, Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026. And of course, Iran will play in the United States of America. The reason for that is simple, because we have to unite. We have to bring people together,” Infantino said while addressing Iran’s place in the upcoming tournament (via GiveMeSport).
This soon prompted a response from the USA President, Donald Trump. Speaking to the media on Thursday, Apr. 30, 2026, Trump was asked about Infantino’s comments on Iran’s World Cup spot.
“Well, if Gianni said it, I’m OK. Did Gianni say it? Gianni Infantino – that’s a piece of work. “If they win, we’ll have to worry about that. I’m going to have to worry about that one. You know what, let them play. Gianni is fantastic, he’s a friend of mine, he talked about it, I said, ‘you do whatever you want.’
“You can have them, you don’t have to have them, they probably have a good team. Do they have a good team, do you have any idea?” The reporter who posed the initial question said he had no idea, to which Trump replied: “It would be hard to believe actually. But let them play, right?” Trump further added.
Trump’s statements come after his previous statement about the Iranian soccer team visiting the USA for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Iran is currently scheduled to play New Zealand in Los Angeles on Jun. 15, Belgium in Los Angeles on Jun. 21, and Egypt in Seattle on Jun. 26.

It would be hard to believe they have a good team but we must let them play at the world cup."pic.twitter.com/zmzYaVIiEz
