Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani keeps on-base streak alive despite ugly loss to Rockies

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ bats went cold in a rare 4-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night at Coors Field, but Shohei Ohtani still managed to stand out, extending his historic on-base streak to 50 games.

Ohtani’s milestone moment came in the ninth inning when he poked a two-out single, tying Hall of Famer Willie Keeler for the third-longest on-base streak in franchise history (since 1900). He also became the fourth player in Dodger history to reach the bases safely in 50 straight games. The streak nearly ended earlier in the game. In his first plate appearance, the 31-year-old reached on a throwing error by first baseman Troy Johnston, which did not count toward the streak. He later reached via catcher’s interference in the eighth, also excluded from official on-base calculations. Ohtani also recorded a groundout in the third and a flyout in the fifth before his clutch hit in the ninth preserved the run.

The milestone aside, Los Angeles (15-5) struggled offensively, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners, including two in the ninth inning. The team’s only scoring came early, highlighted by Kyle Tucker’s 435-foot, two-run home run in the first inning, his third of the season, and Dalton Rushing’s solo shot in the second, his fifth homer in just 18 at-bats. The Dodgers have now hit multiple home runs in 10 of their first 20 games, leading MLB with 37.

Starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan allowed two runs on four hits over five innings, striking out four and walking two across 77 pitches. He exited with a 3-2 lead, but reliever Will Klein (1-1) surrendered the advantage in the sixth inning. After allowing a leadoff double and an infield single, Klein gave up a two-run double to Johnston, which turned out to be the game-deciding blow.

Colorado’s bullpen held firm, combining for 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Brennan Bernardino (2-0) earned the win, while Victor Vodnik earned his third save despite allowing two singles in the ninth.

The loss was Los Angeles’ first defeat against a National League opponent this season after starting 11-0, and ended a five-game winning streak.

The Dodgers will take on the Rockies again Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch set for 3:10 p.m. EST.
