Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior reveals exactly what went wrong for Tanner Scott in 2025

The 2025 campaign was a bit of a struggle for relief pitcher Tanner Scott, as he experienced near career-worst numbers in his first year with the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, this season has been a completely different story, as Scott is playing as one of the most efficient options out of the bullpen. Pitching coach Mark Prior opened up recently about what led to Scott’s struggles last season.

Prior claimed that the 31-year-old left-hander had difficulties in 2025 because he was throwing strikes at the wrong time, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Essentially, Scott was throwing more pitches into the strike zone than he needed to.

“Last year was weird because he came in and he was throwing a ton of strikes,” said Prior about Scott’s performance in 2025. “Problem is, he was throwing strikes at the wrong times.”

Being able to manage when to throw in the strike zone vs. when not to is one of the keys to success for any pitcher at any level. Now that Prior is saying it, looking at Scott’s 2025 stats sort of tells the tale. The 10-year veteran ended last season with a 4.74 ERA (second-worst in his career) and 1.263 WHIP with 60 strikeouts through 57.0 innings pitched.

The 2026 campaign has been much more successful for Tanner Scott. Through 19.2 innings pitched so far this season, the one-time All-Star owns a 1.37 ERA (second-best in his career) and a 0.610 WHIP (career-best) with 20 strikeouts.

With his most recent game played in the 5-4 win over the San Diego Padres on May 19, Scott could have a chance at making another mound appearance on Friday. The Dodgers are scheduled to take on the Milwaukee Brewers for the first contest of a three-game series.
