Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman hilariously takes issue with ex-teammate’s pick-off attempt
Freddie Freeman has recorded only 106 stolen bases in 2,236 regular season games. He has 10 total since suffering a nasty ankle sprain in September of 2024. Translation: the 6-foot-4, 36-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman is not usually a threat to swipe a bag. Well, try telling that to Michael Soroka.
The right-handed Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher knows Freeman quite well after spending four years with him on the Atlanta Braves, but he was not taking any chances. Soroka attempted to pick off the 2024 World Series MVP multiple times in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s National League West matchup. Freeman could not understand why anyone would consider him a flight risk.
He then broke into hearty laughter, sporting the warmth that has defined him for so much of his terrific career. The 2020 MVP and three-time Silver Slugger belted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, so perhaps Soroka was trying to get some friendly revenge on his former teammate. In any event, Freeman did not steal a base in this game. But he did make a big impact.

Following his tone-setting 394-foot blast, the three-time World Series champion recorded two additional hits in what turned out to be a 6-5 Dodgers victory. LA (39-22) evens up its series with the Diamondbacks and has now won 15 of its last 19 games. Freddie Freeman continues to see the ball well. What else is new?
Despite his limitations on the base paths, No. 5 remains one of the steadiest left-handed batters in the sport. He is now slashing .274/.360/.475/.835 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs this season.
Even in his 17th big-league campaign, Freeman can still conquer pitchers. Michael Soroka learned that lesson, and many others might too before year’s end.
