Dodgers claiming Cubs pitcher off waivers leads to Tommy Edman injury move

As the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare for the return of “Snellzilla” himself, Blake Snell, the team has made another pitching move to add some bench depth in the short-term, claiming recently DFA’d Chicago Cubs left-hander Charlie Barnes off of waivers to bolster their bullpen.

Taking to social media to announce the successful claim, the Dodgers reveal that, to make room for Barnes on the 40-man roster, they have moved injured Tommy Edman to 60-day IL, ending any hopes that he would return to the team before Memorial Day.

“The Dodgers claimed LHP Charlie Barnes from the Chicago Cubs,” the Dodgers shared. “In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred IF/OF Tommy Edman to the 60-day injured list.”

Initially drafted into professional baseball in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft by the Minnesota Twins out of Clemson University, Barner has been more of a Quad-A player than a consistent MLB arm during his career, appearing in 38 innings over nine games in 2021 before pitching just three innings in 2026 for the Cubs, allowing four hits and four runs for an ERA of 9.0.

Will Barnes somehow become the Dodgers’ next great bullpen arm? Soaking up meaningful innings when the team’s rock-solid starters leave the mound somewhere between the fifth and seventh innings? Probably not, but if Edman is that far away from returning, giving Barnes a tryout with the big club in the short-term until Snell and Mookie Betts are officially activated isn’t the worst idea, especially since his eventual exit will likely leave open a 40-man roster spot for Alex Freeland, Hyeseong Kim, and Santiago Espinal to all remain with the team after strong early offerings.
