DK Metcalf punches fan in middle of Steelers-Lions Week 16 showdown

Update: The Detroit Free Press caught up with the fan that was struck by DK Metcalf, who identified himself as Ryan Kennedy from Pinckney, Michigan. When asked to identify himself, he spoke about what caused the incident:

“What my full name isn’t is DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf,” Kennedy told the Free Press. “He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf was seen punching a fan in the shoulder during the second quarter of the team’s Week 16 showdown against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The veteran wideout was spotted having a conversation with the fan in the stands before delivering the strike. It is unclear at the moment what prompted this interaction and he was not removed from the game, participating in the Steelers’ next offensive drive.

The Steelers are currently sitting at 8-6 for the year and are currently fighting to maintain their one-game lead at the top of the AFC North standings. While Metcalf is still participating in this game as it unfolds, it is already anticipated that he’ll face a swift punishment by the NFL for this incident, from heavy fines to a possible suspension.

Pittsburgh will visit the Browns for Week 17 next Sunday before closing the regular-season with a critical home showdown against the Ravens in Week 18 that could decide the division. The veteran All-Pro entered Sunday leading the team in receiving with 808 yards and six touchdowns, so a potential absence by him could be damaging to the offense.
