Diego Maradona’s son ends the debate between his father and Lionel Messi

Arguably regarded as two of the greatest soccer players in the history of the sport. Both representing Argentina and winning FIFA World Cups for their nation, Messi and Maradona fanboys are often found arguing about the greatest between the two.

Recently, Maradona’s son settled the debate. On Monday, Apr. 20, 2026, Diego Maradona Jr, son of Diego Armando Maradona, attended a program presented and directed by David Broncano on La 1. There, he was asked about his relationship with Lionel Messi and the comparisons between Messi and his father. “I don’t know him, his entourage didn’t want to. Of the human beings Messi is the number 1, but my father was a God”(via MARCA).

In the interview, he also opened up about his relationship with his father. “We came to have a good relationship after 29 years. When I had no relationship with him, people would come up to me and talk to me about him, but he was always very present in me. Today he is the most present absentee. He gave a lot of joy on and off the pitch. The short time I spent with him was nice, and I had a lot of fun. He was the captain of my happiest days.”

Maradona Jr. was born in Italy in the year 1986 to Cristina Sinagra. Notably, in that same year, Maradona won the World Cup with Argentina and the Scudetto title with Napoli. He has attended all tributes to his father since the latter’s death in November 2020. While Maradona won the 1986 World Cup, Messi captained his side to a World Cup win in 2022.
