Diamondbacks’ Ildemaro Vargas avoids serious injury after scary Max Muncy collision

Thursday night was quite eventful for both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks. In the end, it was the Diamondbacks that got the last laugh, earning a 3-2 victory over their division rival thanks to a walk-off home run from Ketel Marte in the bottom of the ninth.

Earlier in the game, a scary moment unfolded at first base. Dodgers slugger Max Muncy hit a ball down the first base line, which Diamondbacks first baseman Ildemaro Vargas fielded himself. Muncy, with two outs in the inning, was busting his backside to try and get the Dodgers a runner. Vargas was then rushing back to first to try and beat Muncy out to get the third out of the top of the fifth.

The two then collided and both immediately fell to the ground while writhing in pain. Both the Dodgers and Diamondbacks immediately subbed out their respective players after that violent clash, and LA ended up scoring two runs in the inning courtesy of Muncy’s infield single that ended up being very costly.

The good news for the Diamondbacks, aside from the fact that they won, is that Vargas, much like Muncy, managed to escape serious harm. While manager Torey Lovullo revealed that Vargas will be missing the Diamondbacks’ Friday night game against the Washington Nationals, the first baseman is only day-to-day with a bruised thigh, rib cage and neck, as per Jack Sommers of SI.

Considering how hard Muncy collided with Vargas, this is nothing but music to the Diamondbacks’ ears. Vargas, the 34-year-old veteran, has been a solid player for the team this season, sporting a .757 OPS to go with seven home runs and 37 runs batted in on the season.

Pavin Smith was the man who replaced Vargas after the unfortunate collision ended his night prematurely, and he figures to step into the starting lineup amid Vargas’ injury.
