Devils announce front office shake-up
The New Jersey Devils announced on Friday that they will not be renewing the contracts of assistant general manager Dan MacKinnon and senior adviser Chuck Fletcher as part of a front office restructuring led by newly appointed general manager Sunny Mehta.
Mehta, named the franchise’s sixth GM after Tom Fitzgerald was dismissed 10 days prior, has taken control of hockey operations following his hiring last month. He officially assumed authority on April 20 and is operating without a president of hockey operations, giving him full oversight of the organization. New York also missed the playoffs again for the sixth time in the last eight seasons.
Fletcher, 59, had served as an adviser to Fitzgerald for the past two seasons after being fired as GM of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2023. His extensive NHL resume includes roles as assistant GM with the Pittsburgh Penguins during their 2009 Stanley Cup win, AGM with the expansion Florida Panthers starting in 1993, interim GM in 2001-02, GM of the Minnesota Wild from 2009-18, and Philadelphia Flyers GM from 2018-23, along with additional AGM roles with the Anaheim Ducks and Pittsburgh.
MacKinnon, 51, has been part of the Devils’ management structure for a decade after arriving under former GM Ray Shero. Originally joining as director of player personnel, he was later promoted to assistant GM and senior vice president of hockey operations in 2019, and also took on AHL general manager duties in 2021. His earlier career included scouting roles with the Nashville Predators in 2000 and the Penguins in 2007, where he was part of two Stanley Cup-winning teams in 2009 and 2016.
Mehta’s current inner circle includes executive vice president Martin Brodeur, adviser Andy Greene, and assistant GM Kate Madigan, with additional changes still possible as his organizational review continues.
