Cubs’ Seiya Suzuki a late scratch in series finale vs. Giants

With Chicago Cubs star Seiya Suzuki suffering a knee injury in Sunday’s 6-1 win over the San Francisco Giants, there was concern if the issue could keep the 31-year-0ld out for future games. As rumors have swirled around Suzuki and the Cubs regarding his trade status, the focus now is on his health.

Originally, according to Vinnie Duber of The Chicago Sun-Times, Suzuki is in Chicago’s lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Giants, but the catch is that he is at designated hitter, meaning he won’t play in the field. That has since changed.

“Suzuki is in the Cubs’ lineup, as the DH, for the series finale today by the Bay,” Duber wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

UPDATE: After the team announced Suzuki would hit fifth on Sunday, Chicago under an hour later would then note that “Moisés Ballesteros is in for Seiya Suzuki, batting eighth.” Leading some to wonder the extent of Suzuki’s knee injury

Suzuki sustained the injury in the fourth inning while chasing a tough fly-ball, as he looked to overstrain his knee in an awkward spot, forcing him to exit the contest with discomfort in the area. Manager Craig Counsell would say that reports were positive after the fact, but the question remained how Suzuki would feel the next day.

The answer to Counsell’s question would be that he is not feeling healthy enough to play on Sunday, as Suzuki himself said it depended on how he felt.

“I’m wishing it’s not a big deal,” Suzuki said, via an interpreter. “I’ll wake up tomorrow, see how everything feels. If I can go from there, go for it. If not, we’ll see how it goes.”

It was a shame since Suzuki was in the midst of a productive defensive game in right field, having made an impressive sliding catch and zipping a ball to get a runner out at second base before. Suzuki looks to further improve as he has a .255 batting average to go along with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs, as his situation will be monitored.
