Cubs pay tribute to Stacey King during Giants series finale

3-time NBA champion and Chicago Bulls legend Stacey King recently passed away at the age of 59. King spent more than three decades with the Bulls as a player and announcer and had rightfully become a city icon. As a result, the Chicago Cubs held a minute of silence for King during their series finale against the San Francisco Giants, per a post on X by Jesse Rogers.

A three-time NBA champion during the franchise’s first championship dynasty and later an Emmy-winning broadcaster, King’s basketball journey began long before his NBA championships.

After helping Oklahoma reach the 1988 NCAA title game, he emerged as one of the nation’s top college players the following season. King averaged a conference-best 26 points and 2.3 blocks per game in 1988-89, earning First-Team All-America honors and Big Eight Player of the Year recognition. That led the Bulls to select him with the sixth overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-11 forward-center immediately became part of a rising Chicago team led by Michael Jordan. King appeared in all 82 games as a rookie, averaging 8.9 points and 4.7 rebounds off the bench. He remained with the Bulls throughout the franchise’s first three-peat, winning NBA championships in 1991, 1992, and 1993.

Across an eight-year NBA career that also included stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, and Dallas Mavericks, King averaged 6.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in 438 career games. Following his playing career, King briefly moved into coaching, serving as head coach of the Rockford Lightning of the Continental Basketball Association during the 2001-02 season.

However, his most lasting impact came after returning to the Bulls organization as a broadcaster in 2006. Over nearly two decades on television broadcasts, he became one of the most recognizable voices in Chicago sports.

Regardless, the Cubs ended up losing 2-1 after Matt Chapman delivered the decisive moment of the series finale, driving in automatic runner Jonah Cox with a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th inning.
