Cubs’ Matthew Boyd gets huge update amid injury recovery
Matthew Boyd was one of the most impactful free agency signings of the 2024-25 offseason, acting as the workhorse pitcher the Chicago Cubs needed in order to end a four-year playoff drought. He logged 179 2/3 innings in 31 starts, offering productivity and stability for a large chunk of the campaign. The left-handed starter has not displayed those traits in 2026, though. Well, the formerly dependable Boyd will soon have a chance to bounce back.
The 2025 All-Star is responding well after tossing four scoreless innings in a rehab outing for the High-A South Bend Cubs on Saturday and is scheduled to have a bullpen session with the team on June 22, per MLB.com. Boyd could come off the injured list during Chicago’s upcoming road trip, which begins against the New York Mets on Monday night and concludes versus the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, June 28.
The Cubbies sorely need another healthy and competent hurler on the hill, so hopefully there is more good news on the way. They currently own possession of the third and final National League Wild Card slot, but fans are by no means brimming with confidence.
A rejuvenated Matthew Boyd can potentially change their disposition. The 35-year-old has accumulated a 6.00 ERA with 31 strikeouts and a .714 OPS allowed through 24 innings of work. He underwent left knee meniscectomy surgery in May. Is it any coincidence that the Cubs (40-37) have struggled to maintain consistency amid his frequent injury absences and on-mound struggles?
One thing is for certain: the rotation has to step up. Boyd will try to conclude his recovery process in Flushing and add a jolt of life to Chicago’s starting staff.
