Cubs’ David Peterson surrenders home run on 1st pitch after Mets trade

David Peterson has been in a funk since last summer, with his steep descent mirroring that of the New York Mets. He desperately needed a fresh start, and the Chicago Cubs (44-38) mercifully gave it to him on Thursday. Unfortunately, the left-handed starting pitcher had to suffer a bit more before getting properly acclimated to his new team.

Peterson surrendered a home run to Milwaukee Brewers star left fielder Jackson Chourio on the very first pitch of Friday night’s National League Central battle. How does the saying go? The more things change, the more they stay the same. The 2025 All-Star is still searching for answers after getting traded from the Mets. How much longer will fans have to wait for him to find some?

The Cubs sent 2024 second-round draft pick Cole Mathis to New York because they were desperate for more pitching. The starting rotation is sorely shorthanded, with Cade Horton done for the season, Justin Steele likely to miss the remainder of the campaign and Edward Cabrera and Jameson Taillon both on the injured list.

Understanding the severity of the situation, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer took a chance on Peterson. The 30-year-old southpaw did settle down in his Chicago debut, but he still owns a wretched 5.92 ERA at time of print. There is no time to waste, for player or team.

David Peterson is in the final year of his contract, so the Cubs are hoping he does some inspired pitching this summer. Fair or not, their hopes of playing October baseball could hinge on this 6-foot-6 newcomer.
