Cubs’ Alex Bregman makes ‘god awful’ admission after loss to Giants

The Chicago Cubs haven’t quite gotten back to their dominant form to begin the 2026 season. They lost 10 straight games not too long ago and have been struggling to remain above .500 ever since. On Sunday night, the Cubs’ offense went silent in a 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants — prompting Alex Bregman to do some self-blaming for letting his team down.

Bregman went 0-5 on the night and he made the final out of the ballgame. This has been shaping up to be the worst offensive season of his career to this point, with his empty night dropping his OPS to .669 on the season. But with runners in scoring position, he’s been even worse; as per ESPN, heading into their Sunday night clash vs. the Giants, Bregman was sporting an OPS of .429 with a teammate on either second or third base.

Even the Cubs third baseman himself has had enough of this kind of play that’s rather uncharacteristic of someone who’s been productive for his entire MLB career.

“I haven’t executed all year. Runners in scoring position, I’ve been god awful,” Bregman admitted, via Jesse Rogers of ESPN.

Bregman’s led off the inning for his first three at-bats of the night against the Giants, but his final two plate appearances were a disaster, plain and simple. In the eighth inning, the Cubs had runners at the corners, but Bregman lined into the third baseman, and the Giants caught the lead runner straying too far away from the bag.

And then in the 10th inning, Bregman popped up to end the game when Pete Crow-Armstrong began the inning as the tying run at second base.

Bregman is now 13-75 (.173 BA) with runners in scoring position, and he is the Cubs’ cleanup hitter. Suffice to say, the math is not working for Chicago right now, and Bregman’s struggles have not helped whatsoever.
