Croatia vs Ghana predictions and betting tips – Backing Croatia’s experience to prove decisive

Croatia haven’t exactly blown anyone away yet but I still think they’re in a really good place heading into this final group game. They did what they had to against Panama and now know another win should be enough to reach the knockout stages.

Ghana deserve enormous credit for holding England to a goalless draw but that game played right into their hands. They were able to sit deep, stay organised and frustrate. I don’t think they’ll get quite the same sort of game here.

Croatia are patient, they move the ball well and they’ve got enough quality to eventually wear teams down. I fancy them to get the job done and keep another clean sheet.

Both managers are expected to stick with the sides that started their previous matches.

Croatia found a way past Panama thanks to Ante Budimir’s winner, while Ghana earned a valuable point against England with an excellent defensive display and know another positive result could take them through.

• Ghana expected lineup: Asare; Mensah, Opoku, Adjetey, Senaya, Yirenkyi; Partey, Sibo; Ayew, Semenyo; I. Williams.

Croatia vs Ghana predictions

I’ve watched both of these sides closely and I just think Croatia are built for games like this.

They might not be the most exciting team in the tournament but they know exactly how to manage matches when the pressure is on.

Against Panama they stayed patient, dominated the ball and eventually got the breakthrough. That’s been the Croatia way for years.

Ghana deserve huge praise for the way they defended against England. They worked tirelessly, stayed compact and frustrated one of the favourites for long spells. The problem is I don’t think they can approach this game in exactly the same way.

Depending on the other result, they may need to show a bit more ambition at some stage and that could leave spaces Croatia are more than capable of exploiting.

I just trust Croatia far more in the big moments. Luka Modrić still dictates the tempo, Mateo Kovačić keeps everything ticking over and Budimir gives them a proper focal point in the box. Ghana will make life difficult, but I think Croatia’s experience eventually tells. I’m calling it 2-0 Croatia.

I’ve gone for three bets here and they all revolve around Croatia controlling the game and eventually getting the job done.

Croatia to get the job done

This feels like a typical Croatia performance. It probably won’t be spectacular but they’re experienced enough to stay patient and wait for their opportunity.

Ghana defended brilliantly against England but asking them to repeat that level against another top-quality side is a big ask.

Budimir can strike again

Budimir grabbed the winner against Panama and I think he’ll be full of confidence coming into this one. Croatia should enjoy plenty of possession and if they keep putting crosses into the box, I’d fancy him to get on the end of one sooner or later.

Kovačić to do the dirty work

I actually think this is the value bet in the game.

Ghana will look to break quickly through Semenyo and Williams whenever they win possession and Kovačić is often the one who steps in to stop those counter attacks.

He’s experienced enough to take one for the team and at 9/2 I’d happily back him to find his way into the book.
