Craig Stammen brings up ‘good thing’ amid Padres’ woes on offense
Craig Stammen sees a silver lining in the San Diego Padres’ offense despite their 7-3 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday night.
Stammen is going through the first year of his head coaching career in the majors. He started the first of the three-year contract with the Padres, seeing him stand out as the only former pitcher being a head coach.
Jackson Merrill’s .604 OPS is only a tick above Manny Machado’s (.596), shortstop Xander Bogaerts (.648 OPS) was hitless in his previous five games before going 1-for-4 on Sunday and Fernando Tatis Jr. (.670 OPS) still has only one homer.
Adding injury to insult, Miguel Andujar (.706 OPS) exited in the seventh inning with a tweaked hamstring after beating out an infield single. It was one of seven Padres hits in the game, drawing comments from Stammen after the loss.
“Well, we haven’t found them yet; that’s where the search is,” Stammen said of the two-month head-scratcher about the team’s offense. “And we’re going to keep looking for it. The good thing is we have very talented players that we’re working with, and they can make adjustments. They’re elite at adjustments. We’re just in search of that answer.”
How Craig Stammen, Padres performed against Mets
Craig Stammen has done a decent job at keeping the Padres afloat in the first half of the season. However, he will have to address the recent issues on offense to have a chance at having his squad in the playoff picture. That is certainly the case after their home loss to the Mets, losing the series 2-1 this weekend.
San Diego fell to a 33-31 record on the season, sitting at third place in the NL West Division standings. They are above the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies. However, they trail the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers at the moment.
The Padres look to bounce back in their next series at home, taking on the Cincinnati Reds. Game 1 of the three-game set will commence on June 8 at 9:40 p.m. ET.
