Conor McGregor admits to making ‘mistakes’ before UFC return

In less than a few weeks, on Jul. 11, 2026, Conor McGregor is set to make his much-awaited UFC comeback. Returning to the octagon after almost five years, McGregor is scheduled to face longtime rival Max Holloway.

The stalwarts will compete against each other in the main event of UFC 329 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Returning from a broken tibia injury, McGregor recently opened up to CBS’ Nate Burleson in an interview, where he admitted to making certain mistakes before his return.

McGregor reflected on the absence that kept him out of competition for nearly five years and also accepted the criticisms aimed at him. “It’s probably accurate at moments for sure,” McGregor said while addressing the suggestions that he had lost his passion. “At 27 years of age, I had the game conquered. Two-weight world champion. I had the Floyd bout boxed off. I was only 27 years of age. I had the game wrapped up in a blink, and what more was I to do? I got lost.”

McGregor’s latest fight was a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, when he suffered a broken tibia in the first round, his second consecutive defeat to Poirier, and his third loss in his last four bouts.

The years that followed saw him involved in a failed Irish presidential campaign and multiple legal matters. “I made some mistakes off of that, and that’s it,” he said. “But you’ll always come home. If you truly love something, you’ll always come home. And that’s what happened to me.

“There may be pockets where I would have disrespected and disgraced the position that God had put me in,” he further added. “Maybe some fans would see that. Maybe he showed no love for the game. It’s probably accurate. It is accurate, in fact.”
