Commanders’ Jayden Daniels sounds off on learning new offense without Kliff Kingsbury

The Washington Commanders skipped a few steps in Jayden Daniels’ rookie season, making a run all the way to the NFC Championship Game thanks to one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. In 2025, they got a big-time reality check in a number of ways.

Washington took a step back, in large part due to an aging defense and a shallow receiving core that just didn’t hold up over the course of the season Multiple injuries to Daniels didn’t help matters either, as the Commanders played quarterback roulette throughout the back half of the year while their star was sidelined with an elbow issue.

Following the season, which saw Washington finish 5-12, big changes came on both sides of the ball. The Commanders moved on from both coordinators, as Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Whitt Jr. were both fired. They were replaced by David Blough on offense and Daronte Jones on defense.

At mandatory minicamp, Daniels and the rest of the offense have been learning the new offense under Blough. With the summer approaching, the third-year signal-caller is having a blast learning the new system, and he talked about that on Wednesday via JP Finlay of NBC4 Sports.

“It’s been fun just building this foundation with the new offense with all the guys,” Daniels said. “It’s been fun coming out here and competing in practice and just getting to learn every day and get better.”

Daniels and company are still considering bringing in reinforcements this offseason, as wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is expected to become available at some point this offseason. Aiyuk would be a perfect addition to what is still a pretty thin receiver room in Washington, so it would be no surprise to see them make the move.

Either way, this season will likely come down to how comfortable Daniels is working with Blough in the new offense. If he is comfortable and has full command, it could very well be off to the races again, like it was in his rookie year. If not, it could be another long year in the nation’s capital.
