Chelsea sacks Liam Rosenior 4 months in after historically bad stretch not seen since 1912

English Premier League giant Chelsea has fired manager Liam Rosenior just four months into his tenure. The sacking came a day after Chelsea’s embarrassing 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. The loss not only severely damaged the Blues’ 2026-27 Champions League hopes, but it also made history for the venerated club.

The loss marked Chelsea’s fifth straight Premier League loss, and they haven’t scored a goal in any of those matches. The last time the team scored in the EPL was on March 4th. And the last time Chelsea had a goal drought this long was over 100 years ago, in 1912, per ESPN.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, an American investment billionaire, hired Rosenior in January 2026 after separating from manager Enzo Maresca, who had led the team for about 18 months.

With the loss to Brighton, Chelsea dropped to seventh place. They are currently seven points out of the fifth and final EPL Champions League spot with four matches to play in the 2025-26 season and behind both Brighton (sixth) and Liverpool (fifth). The Blues last missed out on UCL play at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season when they finished in 12th place.

While there are currently no reports about Chelsea targeting a specific managerial candidate to replace Rosenior, they will be paying a lot for past managers next season and beyond. Rosenior signed a 5 1/2-year deal in January to manage the club.

Next up for Chelsea under interim manager Calum McFarlane is a showdown with Leeds United in the FA Cup semifinals. The club’s next EPL matchup comes on May 4 vs. Nottingham Forest.
