Chelsea Gray passes her head coach Becky Hammon in Las Vegas all-time assists

Chelsea Gray is one of the best point guards in the WNBA, and on Saturday afternoon she submitted another record in their clutch 84-79 victory over the Las Vegas Aces. Gray finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Her last assist to Jackie Young ultimately led to her passing her head coach Becky Hammon to become the Ace’s all-time leader in assists.

In post-game comments, Gray spoke about how the accomplishment felt.

“It’s a testament to all the players that I’ve been able to play with. I’ve played with some great players, and I’m currently playing with great players. And so you need a little help to get those assists. So, I mean, I’m just blessed to be in the position that I am. Healthy, having fun doing it, and enjoying the moment.”

Heading into the game, Gray knew that she was close to the accomplishment but kept her eyes set on the goal at hand: winning the game.

“I knew the other day, but when we went into the game, I forgot about it. Like, I didn’t think about it at all. So, I’m glad I didn’t know about it until after the game, really.”

Gray described the game as a playoff-like atmosphere. In detail, what it took to win in a grinded-out game of that magnitude.

“Sometimes you got to win ugly. It’s going to come down to a grind if, once again, we have another game that feels like a playoff environment, and it’s going to come down to a few possessions. I’m glad we were able to execute, and I’m glad I have Jackie Young and A’ja Wilson on my team.”
