Celtics’ Jaylen Brown goes full NSFW in doubling down on Joel Embiid criticism

On Saturday night, the Boston Celtics’ 2026 NBA championship hopes turned to dust. Despite taking a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Philadelphia 76ers, a team they’ve historically beaten down in the playoffs, the Celtics faltered when it mattered the most, losing three consecutive games including a 109-100 barnburner of a loss in Game 7 to their sworn rival.

After the game, Jaylen Brown, despite tipping his cap to Joel Embiid for a herculean performance in the 76ers’ closeout victory, made it clear to reporters what he thought of the officiating and how Embiid was able to manipulate the foul calls to his favor.

Undeterred, the Celtics star, a day after their gut-wrenching Game 7 defeat at home, doubled down on his criticism of the 76ers star, whom he was jawing with in the second half of their Saturday night clash.

“Flopping has ruined our game. Joel Embiid is a great player, one of the best bigs in f**king basketball history, flops. He knows it,” Brown said on his Twitch stream on Sunday.

It is hard to deny what Brown is accusing Embiid of. There is indeed a tendency for the 76ers star to exaggerate the contact he receives sometimes, which then leads to easy points on the board for Philly courtesy of the free-throw line.

But the NBA, and basketball in general, has a lot of theatrics baked into it. Any team would want to gain an advantage however they could, and it’s not like Embiid is the only superstar in the NBA who is looking to bait the referees into calling fouls on the opposition.

Even Brown, when trying to manufacture points for the Celtics, can exaggerate contact sometimes, and that is not an indictment of who he is as a player. It’s part of his responsibility as one of his team’s best players to try and get his team to victory, and if that means flopping to get foul calls, then so be it.
