Cardinals mourn death of former defensive end Josh Mauro
The NFL community received unfortunate news on Tuesday after it was announced that former Arizona Cardinals defensive end Josh Mauro had passed away. Mauro’s family did not reveal the cause of death.
He was 35 years old.
Mauro spent eight seasons in the league, including six years in two stints with the Cardinals. He also played for the New York Giants and the Las Vegas Raiders. He ended his career in Arizona in 2021.
In a statement, the Cardinals mourned the death of Mauro.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss,” said the team.

Mauro tallied 130 total tackles and five sacks in his career. He was undrafted out of Stanford, and his journey in the NFL was a testament to his drive and perseverance.
Fans expressed their condolences after learning of Mauro’s death.
“Way, way too young. Rest in peace, Josh,” said @jcgc3741.
“IDK if it’s just me, but these actually are really hitting close to home with Rondale (Moore) and now Josh,” added @HypeArizona.
“Truly a sad day,” wrote @Zingrayman.

Cardinals reporter Darren Urban, meanwhile, remembered Mauro as an “excellent belly-of-the-roster player” who embraced his role and sacrificed personal glory for the betterment of the team.
Urban recalled a quote from Mauro: “It’s bigger than you making plays, it’s bigger than getting your name called, it’s bigger than the newspaper having your numbers.”
