Cardinals’ Ivan Herrera ruins Pete Crow-Armstrong heroics with an extra-innings RBI

Ivan Herrera delivered a two-run walk-off double Wednesday night, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs in 10 innings at Busch Stadium.

The 26-year-old catcher and designated hitter’s decisive hit erased a two-run deficit created by Pete Crow-Armstrong’s homer in the top half of the inning. The comeback snapped St. Louis’ three-game losing streak and prevented the Cardinals from dropping the first three games of the four-game divisional series.

ClutchPoints shared the final play on X, formerly Twitter, moments after Herrera completed the rally in the bottom of the 10th.

“Iván Herrera WINS IT for the Cardinals with this 2-run hit ”

Neither team scored during the first nine innings before Crow-Armstrong broke the stalemate against Cardinals reliever Luis Gastelum. The Cubs outfielder hit a two-run home run in the top of the 10th, putting Chicago three outs away from another victory in the series.

St. Louis responded against Cubs reliever Trent Thornton. Pinch-hitter Lars Nootbaar opened the rally with a single before JJ Wetherholt drew a walk to load the bases. Jordan Walker followed with an RBI forceout at third base, cutting Chicago’s advantage to 2-1 while leaving runners at first and second.

Herrera then lined a double into left-center field, allowing Wetherholt and Walker to score the tying and winning runs. The hit completed the Cardinals’ comeback immediately after Crow-Armstrong appeared to have supplied Chicago’s decisive moment.

The result carried added importance for a Cardinals club that entered the matchup having lost nine of its previous 11 outings. The win moved St. Louis to 54-54, kept it within a half-game of Pittsburgh for third place in the NL Central, and preserved their chance to split the four-game series with the Cubs.
