Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin drops truth bomb amid retirement rumors
The Washington Capitals ended their season on a four-game winning streak, but it was not enough to secure a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. As the season has come to an end, the NHL career of Alex Ovechkin may have come to an end as well.
Before the Capitals’ game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Ovi addressed the retirement rumors, speaking with his former teammate, TJ Oshie of ESPN.
“Whenever you do step away, what do you think you’re going to miss most?” Oshie asked his long-time teammate.
“I didn’t step away yet so, we’ll figure it out,” Ovechkin responded. “You tell me.”
While the broadcast on Tuesday night treated the game as the end of the Ovechkin era, as has social media and fans, Ovechkin has been clear that he has not made a final decision. In the second-to-last game of the season, the Capitals faced the Pittsburgh Penguins, who lined up for a handshake line celebrating Ovi. The line was waived off, as the NHL veteran smiled.
“I don’t decide yet. Thanks to them to wait out there,” Ovechkin said after the game on Sunday about the lineup.
The ESPN broadcast stayed focused on The Great 8 after the game, with the camera continually focused on him in the locker room. They waited for him to take off the jersey one final time before the camera was removed from the locker room.

After the contest, Tom Wilson spoke to the media about his captain.
“I don’t think anybody knows what’s happening, but obviously it’s been such a tremendous honor. There are really no words to describe what he means to me and what he means to this organization,” a slightly emotional Wilson said.
While it is clear, no one knows what Ovechkin is going to do this summer, if it is the end, one of the best to play the game will have made his impact on the league forever.
