Canucks’ Elias Pettersson drops ‘home’ truth bomb amid trade rumors

The Vancouver Canucks were the worst team in the NHL this past season. And they didn’t come close to the Stanley Cup Playoffs as a result. The Canucks fired general manager Patrik Allvin on Friday. Whoever takes over has a lot of work to do. But the biggest item on the offseason agenda revolves around the future of forward Elias Pettersson.

Pettersson was once a 100-point center who helped Vancouver nearly make the Western Conference Finals. However, his offensive production has dropped off a cliff since then. This past season saw him score just 15 goals and 51 points in 74 games. This drop in production, combined with a huge contract, has placed him firmly in trade discussions across the league.

What happens with Pettersson certainly remains to be seen. If the Canucks forward has his way, though, he would like to remain in British Columbia. “I like it here. This feels like home. I signed here for a reason. We are in a tough spot, none of us are happy with this said. But like (Thatcher Demko) and (Brock Boeser) said, we’ve got good pieces,” the Vancouver forward said in a video shared by Sportsnet.

Vancouver finished the 2025-26 season with a record of 25-49-8, good for 58 points. They are the only team with fewer than 60 points in the NHL. In fact, the second-lowest point total in the league was 72, owned by the Chicago Blackhawks.

It was a fundamental disaster for the Canucks in 2025-26. But Pettersson is looking to turn things around in Vancouver. Only time will tell if he will get the chance to do that in 2026-27.
