Cameron Young posted a First Nine 40 on Thursday. He was 4-over through the first half of his opening Masters round.

That feels like forever ago now. When Young, the Players Champion, walked off of the 18th green at Augusta National on Saturday he was the tournament’s outright leader. That is quite the turnaround.

Rory McIlroy tied Young for the lead at 11-under just a few moments after Cameron finished his round, but the point is that Cameron was in that position and that given where he stood early on Thursday that is an insane turn of events.

Young has hit 37 of 42 possible fairways this week and hit 12 of 14 specifically on Saturday. That was one fewer than his Friday round, but where he really improved was in targeting the greens with opportunities to score. Cameron hit 16 of 18 greens on Saturday which was up from 14 on Friday and significantly up from the 10 he had in the opening round.

The final part of Saturday’s round has to be played at the time of this writing, but Cameron Young is ascending and is every bit involved in the race for this year’s green jacket.

Buckle up.
