Caleb Downs steal gives the Cowboys top-5 draft class per Dane Brugler
The 2026 NFL Draft has officially concluded with 257 selections.
Although the true impact of this draft class will take years to assess, the immediate evaluations of all 32 teams have begun.
The Dallas Cowboys were highlighted as major winners in the final evaluations, and this success can be attributed to their strategic decision-making regarding their top-tier assets.
By trading up to select Ohio State safety Caleb Downs with the 11th pick, the front office acquired what many consider the best player in the draft on a pound-for-pound basis.
This move signals a crucial shift for a team aiming to reclaim its defensive identity.
According to Dane Brugler of The New York Times, Downs was his favorite selection for Dallas, describing the safety as a “culture changer” who will be the perfect anchor for the new Christian Parker-led defense.
Brugler highlighted that Downs possesses elite play speed, processing, and tackling abilities well above those of the average prospect.
His physical and mental versatility at the nickel position is expected to make him a Day 1 difference-maker in a Vic Fangio-inspired scheme.
ESPN echoed this praise, awarding the Cowboys an “A” grade for addressing a historically poor defensive unit in 2025.

Last season, Dallas allowed 30.1 points per game, ranking last in the NFL, and surrendered a league-high 54 plays of 25 or more yards.
Downs, who was ranked as the sixth-best overall prospect on most boards, fell to No. 11, giving Dallas a legitimate “steal.”
With six career interceptions and elite instincts that allow him to sniff out run plays, he transforms a safety room that was a major liability into one with championship-level promise.
The magnitude of the selection didn’t escape on former Cowboys star Micah Parsons, who shared some veteran wisdom with the rookie shortly after the pick.
Parsons, now an elite edge rusher for the Packers, reminded Downs that while being a first-round pick brings heavy expectations, that “pressure is a privilege.”
He urged the young safety to eliminate the outside noise and media distractions that inevitably come with the Dallas spotlight.
Given Downs’ dominant collegiate tenure at Alabama and Ohio State, he appears more than ready to handle that pressure and provide the immediate impact the Cowboys need to fix their secondary.
