Caitlin Clark will be furious with WNBA’s decision on ‘clapping’ technical

There is no love lost between Caitlin Clark and WNBA referees. Clark was not happy when she received her fifth technical foul of the season in a chippy game against the Mercury. Now Clark is likely to be even more upset after the WNBA put their foot down about that ruling.

The WNBA decided not to rescind the technical foul Clark received for clapping during Monday’s game against the Mercury, per The Athletic’s James Boyd.

Boyd added that Indiana still plans to appeal Clark’s technical foul, but they have not yet heard back from the WNBA. Per league rules, a player automatically receives a one-game suspension after reaching eight technical fouls.

Clark picked up the foul during the fourth quarter after getting tangled up with former teammate DeWanna Bonner. Clark fouled Bonner and sparked a heated exchange between both teams. She then clapped towards Mercury players after being separated from Bonner, which the referees deemed as “instigating.”

The young superstar made it clear that she does not agree with that decision.

“[Referee Gerda Gatling] said that I got a technical for clapping,” Clark said, per Boyd. “So, if any technical should be taken away, it should be that one, if it’s truly for clapping. That’s what they said they gave it to me for. It’s just ridiculous. I don’t understand it at all.”

Fever coach Stephanie White defended Clark’s passionate play. However, White acknowledged that her superstar point guard needs to be more careful in the future.

“There are natural things that happen that the energy of the game creates when you do get those (technical fouls), but there are some that we can be a little bit more in control (of),” White said. “And so yes, we’ll continue to remind her, and I think she has to have an awareness.”
