Bulls rumors: The GM push Chicago will make after hiring Bryson Graham

The Chicago Bulls are beginning anew from a front-office standpoint. On Monday, the team hired former Atlanta Hawks executive Bryson Graham as their new Executive VP of Basketball Operations.

Meanwhile, they are still searching for a new coach and a new general manager. Apparently, the latter is where they want to drastically change course, per Joe Cowely of The Chicago Sun-Times. According to Cowley, the Bulls are looking to go beyond the old-school mentality they’ve relied on for so long, particularly with a front office led by John Paxson and Gar Forman.

Also, they are looking to counter the perception that the Bulls don’t spend on the front office.

Even after Arturas Karnisovas was hired as VP of Basketball Operations in 2020, he changed the front office with plenty of money, but it still lagged behind the rest of the league. But with Graham’s hiring, that is about to change.

“We’ve been playing checkers, and now it’s time to play chess,” a source said to Cowley.

Furthermore, Cowley reports that the Bulls are keeping an eye on Boston Celtics assistant GM Dave Lewin. They interviewed him for the Executive VP role, but they are still considering him as a potential new general manager.

Since 2022, Lewin has been instrumental in helping shape the Celtics into the 2023-24 NBA champions. He brings a trifecta of managing the salary cap, scouting, and utilizing analytics to improve the roster.

In 2024, Lewin was recognized on The Athletic’s NBA 40 under 40 list.

Graham will host an introductory press conference on Wednesday at 12:00 pm CST.
