Bucks franchise legend announcer says quiet part out loud about ‘toxic’ Giannis situation

The Milwaukee Bucks are limping to the finish line of the 2025-26 season, currently dealing with a controversy surrounding superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo reportedly wanted to come back and play to close out this season, but the Bucks wanted to hold him out in hopes of increasing their NBA Draft lottery odds, which led to a rift between the two parties.

Recently, Bucks commentator Marques Johnson spoke on the situation.

“It is as toxic as it appears,” Johnson said, per EssentiallySports. “It’s just a bad situation… With Giannis, you read so many things about it. But the bottom line is that somebody has to be above all of this. Somebody has to be the bigger entity in this. He has meant too much to the franchise, to the city, and to the game of basketball right now to have to wallow in all of this negativity and morass of negativity.”

Johnson also spoke on what he thinks needs to happen in order for the two sides to resolve the issue.

“Everyone needs to be in the same room so everybody can exhale and appreciate each other for this journey that we all have been on and this journey that he’s been a part of with all the success of this team,” he said.

Many around the league have been speculating for multiple years that the Antetokounmpo-Bucks partnership could be on its last legs, and even with the superstar on the court this year, Milwaukee was a below average team.

However, every time things seem to be reaching a breaking point, the two sides have found a way to reassure their commitment to one another, even if it’s growing increasingly obvious that the arrangement is not in the best long-term interests of either party.
