Bryce Harper’s surprising role in Tony Vitello landing Giants coaching gig

The San Francisco Giants are currently gearing up for the upcoming 2026 season by taking part in spring training, which has continued this week. The Giants will be led by new manager Tony Vitello, who was hired by the team in October after departing from the managerial position at Tennessee in college, where he dominated the baseball landscape for several years.

Now, Vitello has shed light on an unexpected source who has helped ease him into his big transition into the MLB: Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper, with MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today noting that Vitello “expressed heartfelt thanks for Bryce Harper for helping him make the transition from college to MLB.”

“He’s gone out of his way to help me out. ..One thing Bryce was adamant about is just a way to handle players and talk to players, but also to lean on players,” said Vitello, per Nightengale on X, formerly Twitter.

Harper has been known to stay in Knoxville, the home of the Tennessee Volunteers, during the offseason over the years, and evidently, he and Vitello formed a bond there that has carried over into Vitello’s transition into the MLB landscape.

Meanwhile, Vitello will be looking to turn around the fortunes of a Giants team that has hovered around mediocrity for the last several years. The Giants last made the playoffs in the 2021 season, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, and have finished between 79 and 81 wins remarkably in all four years since that defeat.

San Francisco hopes that Vitello will provide the team with the injection of new energy it needs to reassume its position among the powerhouses in the NL. They will begin their quest to do that when the regular season gets underway on March 25 for a home series against the New York Yankees.
