Bruins rumors: Former second-round pick emerging into trade candidate

The Boston Bruins fell in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Buffalo Sabres this past year. Now the team is looking to improve, and the Burins are listening to offense for their players, such as Pavel Zacha.

While listening to offers for Zacha, they could also be willing to trade a former second-round pick, Mason Lohrei, according to Christ Johnston of The Athletic.

“Lohrei’s name circulated in trade rumors when the Bruins engaged in discussions on Rasmus Andersson last season. He’s signed through next year at a reasonable cap number and has one year of team control remaining as a restricted free agent beyond that, making him an attractive asset. Lohrei is incredibly mobile for his size and will chip in with a bit of offense from the back end. He’s also made strides defensively,” Johnston wrote.

Lohrei was the 58th overall selection of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Bruins. After finishing his time with Ohio State, he joined the franchise at the end of 2022-23, playing five games and in the playoffs for the Providence Bruins of the AHL. He would then spend 21 games in the AHL the next year before moving to the NHL.

Lohrei played in 73 games for the Bruins this past year, finding the back of the net seven times with 19 helpers. He also played in three playoff games fo the Bruins, but did not record a point.

Lohrei is in the final year of a two-year deal he signed with the team ahead of the 2025-26 season with an AAV of $3.2 million. He will be a restricted free agent at the end of the next campaign.
