Bruins’ fatal flaw that will doom them in 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs

The Boston Bruins defied expectations with their return to the playoffs under head coach Marco Sturm. After finishing in last place in the Eastern Conference a year ago and breaking up their team at last year’s trade deadline, most NHL observers expected the Bruins to go through a dry period where they would retool for at least a couple of seasons before they returned to the Stanly Cup playoffs.

Sturm and his players would have none of it. The Bruins knew they had some strong core pieces in David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy and goalie Jeremy Swayman. They also felt they had enough supporting players in Hampus Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, Morgan Geekie, Pavel Zacha and Victor Arvidsson to provide a strong complementary effort most nights.

The Bruins were correct in their assessment. They won 45 games and reached the 100-point level, and that was good enough to gain them the top Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. They were a dominant team when they played at home this season but tended to have a more difficult time on the road.

That could be an issue in the playoffs, because it is unlikely they will have the home-ice advantage in any of their upcoming playoff series. They certainly won’t have it in the first round as they prepare to play the top-seeded Buffalo Sabres.

The Bruins have a huge playoff experience edge over the Sabres, who are returning to the postseason for the first time in 15 seasons. Bruins had made the playoffs eight consecutive seasons prior to last year’s miss. Despite that advantage, the Bruins will face a major challenge against Tage Thompson and the high-scoring Sabres. Buffalo is hungry to show off all their offensive skills against the Bruins and in the rounds that follow.

Bruins have multiple lines that can score

While they are underdogs in the series, there is no lack of confidence as the Bruins approach the series. They know that Pastrnak is one of the most creative players in the league and that he is going to cause problems for the Sabres and goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Pastrnak scored 100 points for the fourth consecutive season, joining Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito as the only Bruins to match that achievement.

Pastrnak plays with Elias Lindholm and Geekie on the first line, and Sturm needs that unit to step up in the playoffs. The second line of Zacha, Arvidsson and Casey Mittlestadt, a former Sabre, was the most dependable unit for the Bruins after the Olympics.

Flashy James Hagens joined the Bruins in recent games after a stellar run at Boston College, will play on the third line while the Bruins have a physical fourth line that includes veteran center Sean Kuraly, Tanner Jeannot and hard-hitting Mark Kastelic.

While the Bruins have dependability up front, the Sabres appear to be more dynamic. Thompson may have the most intimidating shot in the league. He had 40 goals and 41 assists, while Alex Tuch has a quick release and lit the lamp 33 times this season.

Head coach Lindy Ruff’s forwards tend to go to the net with a sense of ferocity, and that could turn out to be a problem for the Bruins.

Defense and goaltending will battle hard for Bruins

McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm and Zadorov will sell out to keep the Sabres from establishing position in front of the Boston net. They are tough, hard hitting and solid puck carriers when they advance the puck out of their own zone.

McAvoy has battled a myriad of injuries in the past year, but he has also had his best offensive season with 11 goals and 50 assists.

Swayman has returned to top form after a poor season a year ago. He was the No. 2 goalie for the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic hockey team behind Connor Hellebuyck and he had a 31-18-4 record with a 2.71 goals against average and a .907 save percentage. He will give up some short-side goals to the top corner, but he regularly squares himself well to the shooter and has excellent anticipation and quickness.

If the opening series comes down to a goaltending battle, Swayman would appear to have key advantage over Luukkonen.

Bruins have at least one fatal flaw

The Bruins may be able survive against the Sabres because of their edge in postseason experience and in goal. However, the Sabres may try to push the Bruins around in front of the net. While McAvoy, Zadorov and Hampus Lindholm are tough and experienced, defenseman Mason Lohrei can be outmuscled in his one-on-one battles. He is quick, offensive minded and has a good shot, but the Bruins know he is vulnerable any time he has to use his strength to win the battle.

The Sabres and any other potential Eastern Conference opponent knows this as well, and it will prove fatal to the Bruins.
