Brewers’ Jacob Misiorowski tops Tarik Skubal feat in career-best game vs. Phillies
Milwaukee Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski produced a historic performance on Friday night at American Family Field, striking out 15 Philadelphia Phillies in a 6-0 win while throwing a one-hit shutout on just 95 pitches (74 strikes). The outing came against 27 batters faced, with Philadelphia’s only baserunner being Kyle Schwarber, whose fourth-inning single was immediately erased on a double play.
Misiorowski’s 15 strikeouts set a new benchmark for a “Maddux,” a term named after Hall of Famer Greg Maddux and used for a complete-game shutout in fewer than 100 pitches. He became the pitcher with the most strikeouts ever recorded in a Maddux since pitch count tracking began in 1988, surpassing Tarik Skubal, who previously held the mark with 13 strikeouts on May 25, 2025. In other games tied to Maddux, Clayton Kershaw struck out 13 batters (July 9, 2017), Carlos Carrasco 12 (Sept. 17, 2014), and Cliff Lee 12 (April 14, 2011).
The Brewers right-hander finished his lights-out outing on exactly 95 pitches, allowing only one hit while preventing any earned runs. His final pitch, the 95th of the night, registered 103.1 mph as he struck out Justin Crawford in the ninth inning. In that final frame, eight of his nine pitches were recorded above 100 mph, with the only exception being a 92.2 mph changeup.
Misiorowski consistently overwhelmed Philadelphia’s lineup with velocity, throwing 58 pitches at 100 mph or higher and reaching a top speed of 104.5 mph. His fastball usage included multiple triple-digit strikeouts, including early punchouts of Trea Turner and Bryce Harper at over 103 mph. The 104.5 mph pitch was the fastest clocked strikeout pitch by a starting pitcher in the pitch-tracking era (since 2008), a category in which he also holds multiple top entries this season.
The performance also resulted in a Game Score of 100, the highest recorded since Justin Verlander’s 14-strikeout no-hitter in 2019 and only the 155th such score in MLB history. Before Misiorowski, the Brewers’ franchise record stood at a 95 Game Score by Corbin Burnes in 2021, while Ben Sheets logged a 94 in his 18-strikeout outing in 2004.
Over his last eight starts, Misiorowski has allowed earned runs in only one outing, producing a sequence of 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0. That stretch translates to a 0.17 ERA with 80 strikeouts across 54⅓ innings. During this run, he has joined a select historical group including Walter Johnson, Guy Bush, and Fernando Valenzuela for allowing no more than one earned run across eight starts.
The performance came on the one-year anniversary of Misiorowski’s MLB debut, a stretch in which he has gone 13-5 with a 2.65 ERA over 153 innings and 218 strikeouts in 28 starts and one relief appearance. Over that period, only Cristopher Sanchez (242), Dylan Cease (222), and Jesus Luzardo (221) have amassed more strikeouts, though all have thrown more innings. His 5.3 WAR since debut trails only Sanchez (8.9) and Paul Skenes (6.1).
Milwaukee improved to 42-25 with the win and continues the series Saturday, when Shane Drohan takes the mound against the Phillies’ Aaron Nola.
