Braves’ Spencer Strider invokes Boston Massacre after Minneapolis shooting

Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider has become among the latest sports figures to speak up and make his stance clear on the Minneapolis ICE shootings.

The 27-year-old right-handed hurler conveyed where he stands on what’s happening in Minneapolis in the aftermath of the shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, as he shared a photo via an Instagram Story depicting the Boston Massacre that took place in 1770.

As defined by the official website of the National Parks Service, the Boston Massacre took place on March 5, 1770, as “seven British soldiers fired into a crowd of volatile Bostonians, killing five, wounding another six, and angering an entire colony. The event, known as the Boston Massacre, did not happen in an isolated vacuum, but it occurred as a result of growing tensions between Boston colonists and English Parliament.”

By sharing that post and reposting statements of former US President Barack Obama and Michell Obama, Strider sent a clear message across, at least with regard to his position on the situation happening in Minneapolis.

A one-time All-Star, Strider was selected by the then-Cleveland Indians in the 2017 MLB Draft. However, he did not sign a contract with the Indians and was later selected by the Braves in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. Strider made his MLB debut in 2021.

Two years later, he earned an All-Star nod and finished the 2023 campaign with an MLB-leading 20 victories against just five losses to go along with a 3.86 ERA and 281 strikeouts through 32 starts. He hasn’t been nearly as good since, mainly due to injury.

In the 2025 MLB season, Strider, who signed a six-year, $75 million contract extension with the Braves in 2022, went 7-14 with a 4.45 ERA and 1.396 WHIP through a total of 23 starts and 125.1 innings.
