Braves rumors: Atlanta emerges as trade suitor for Red Sox pitcher after Spencer Strider injury

The Atlanta Braves still hold a seven game lead in the NL Central with their 46-27 record. But with Spencer Strider being shut down due to his elbow injury, the Braves are once again in need of starting pitching.

Leading into the trade deadline, there are plenty of pitchers Atlanta could target. Amongst them is Sonny Gray of the Boston Red Sox, who Mark Feinsand of MLB.com argues would be a strong fit for the Braves.

“Gray has been one of the few bright spots for the underachieving Red Sox, going 8-1 with a 3.03 ERA in his first 12 starts of the season. The 36-year-old right-hander has a full no-trade clause, but the opportunity to move to a contender could prompt Gray to approve a deal,” Feinsaid wrote. “Gray is in the final year of his three-year, $75 million deal, and while he has a $30 million club option for 2027, he can opt out and become a free agent if the option is exercised.”

The Red Sox acquired Gray in an offseason trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in hopes of competing. However, Boston is 15.5 games out of the AL East hunt with their 29-43 record. With free agency looming, they franchise may prefer to recoup some prospect capital rather than watching him walk for free.

Through his first 13 starts with the Red Sox, Gray holds a 3.12 ERA and a 55/17 K/BB ratio. If he were on the Braves, he’d rank second in ERA amongst pitchers with 13+ starts and fourth in strikeouts overall.

Atlanta is serious about making a push for the World Series. But they need a healthy and effective pitching rotation to do so. Adding Gray to the mix would certainly legitimize their unit.
