England World Cup penalty pain boost betting angle

That famous 30 years of pain that Baddiel and Skinner sang about in 1996 has doubled and now sits at 60 years since England last won the World Cup.

Three Lions’ fans hopes have been dashed in every conceivable way since then and penalties have perhaps been the cruelest of the lot.

Of the 11 penalty shootouts England have faced at major tournaments, six of them have been lost.

Think Stuart Pearce in 1990, Gareth Southgate in 1996, David Batty 1998 – it became too much of a theme of England’s demise in the 90s.

It didn’t change much later down the line, two penalty losses in two tournaments to Portugal in 2004 and 2006, has been followed by 2014 loss to Italy and then came the Euro 2020 final, agonisingly lost to the Azzuri again from 12 yards.

England did hold their nerve in 2024 against Switzerland but their overall record is enough to suggest, penalty roulette won’t fall in their favour at this year’s World Cup with boosted odds of 5/1 looking a real value play.
