Blue Jays trade for 20-homer infielder amid injury bug

The Toronto Blue Jays have been bitten bad by the injury bug in 2026. But with another World Series appearance still their main goal, Toronto is doing everything in their power to infuse their roster with talent.

The Blue Jays have acquired infielder Lenyn Sosa from the Chicago White Sox, via Mark Fiensand of MLB.com. In turn, Toronto dealt away outfielder Jordan Rich and a player to be named later/cash considerations.

Sosa has spent his entire five-year MLB career with the White Sox, appearing in 315. Overall, he has hit .245 with 37 home runs, 128 RBIs and five stolen bases. His 2026 campaign hasn’t gotten off to the blistering start he hoped for though, as Sosa is batting .212 with no home runs and three RBIs.

Still, the now Blue Jays slugger has shown plenty of potential in the past. During the 2025 campaign, Sosa hit .264 with 22 home runs and 75 RBIs over 140. Toronto at least sees the potential.

Helping Sosa’s cause is his versatility. While he is primarily a second baseman, he has experience playing all three other infield positions. Manager John Schneider could now mix-and-match his lineup. With George Springer hitting the IL, maybe current second baseman Ernie Clement moves to the outfield to open up the spot for Sosa.

Ultimately, that’ll be for manager John Schneider to decide. But it’s clear the Blue Jays didn’t want to be without impactful bats despite many now being on the injured list.

Sosa will need to prove he is more like his 2025 self than the early 2026 version. But Toronto was willing to roll the dice and hope his bat won’t lose any power crossing the border.
