Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer drops revelation about nasty arm bruise after MRI

The Toronto Blue Jays have had a rough start to the 2026 MLB season, currently sitting at 6-8 leading up to Sunday’s series finale against the Minnesota Twins. Pitcher Max Scherzer has been dealing with tendinitis in his throwing arm recently, which has caused some concern as to his playing status going forward.

However, recently, Scherzer clarified that an MRI on his elbow, despite a nasty bruise enveloping the area, confirmed that it was instead a vein burst that had caused the wound, and not anything related to the tendinitis.

“There’s nothing wrong with the ligament. Structurally good. The MRI gave a lot of good news,” he said, per Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. “When I’m pitching against the Dodgers, I didn’t know exactly what I had, so I had to be very careful. … The MRI gave me a lot of information saying, hey, no, you’re good, this is tendinitis, it’s playing like that, so I have a little bit more leash to be able to go after this (Sunday).”

Scherzer also got real on the cautious approach he is taking throughout the season, referencing a recent blowout loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a rematch of last year’s World Series.

“I’m just trying to navigate and stay off the IL,” he said. “I could have gone deeper in that Dodgers start. I just didn’t know what I had. Now I know what I have, it allows me to give a little bit more without feeling like I’m really risking my arm.”

The Blue Jays certainly want to prioritize Scherzer’s health over the long haul, even if it means cutting some of his starts shorter than expected in the meantime.

After Sunday’s game vs the Twins, the Blue Jays will next hit the field on Tuesday on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers.
