Blue Jays manager sends extremely clear message to struggling lineup

The Toronto Blue Jays were defeated 2-1 by the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. Toronto’s lineup has endured a difficult season so far. The Blue Jays are just 25th in runs scored and 21st in home runs. Bo Bichette’s departure in free agency and George Springer’s current injury concern obviously do not help matters, but the lineup still features enough talent to be performing better than they are right now. After Thursday’s contest, Blue Jays manager John Schneider sent a clear message to the lineup, via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.

“We need some extra-base hits. We need to slug,” Schneider said. “We need to get back to everyone doing their part, whether it’s contact or slug. It seems like we’re missing that extra-base hit right now.”

The Blue Jays fell to 7-11 as a result of their defeat on Thursday. Toronto is currently tied with the Boston Red Sox for last place in the American League East.

The Blue Jays had high expectations heading into the season after reaching the World Series during the 2025 campaign. Things obviously have not gone according to plan up to this point in the season, but it is far too early to panic. Toronto could certainly get back on track soon.

The Blue Jays are now set to go to Arizona to play the Diamondbacks in a three-game series. Toronto’s lineup is hoping to find more consistency in Arizona. Perhaps Schneider’s message will help them turn things around. The first game is scheduled for Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 9:40 PM EST.
