Blue Jays’ Jose Berrios may need surgery, but nothing is official

After the Toronto Blue Jays finished the series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday with a 5-3 win, the team would get some key injury updates, specifically about starting pitcher Jose Berrios. Blue Jays John Schneider dropped a major development with Berrios, as he can likely miss way more time in the 2026 season, though nothing is set in stone.

Berrios has yet to make his 2026 debut for the Blue Jays, as he is still looking to get back from an elbow injury that has been keeping him out of action. His last game played in the regular season was on Sept. 24, where Toronto lost to the Boston Red Sox, 701, as he pitched two innings, allowing three earned runs.

As Toronto and Berrios have been hoping for a clean recovery, Schneider would say Friday that “surgery is on the table,” according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.

“It’s an option at this point,” Schneider said on Friday. “We’re just trying to figure out if that’s the route we’re going to go.”

Schneider would also say that there is no ligament damage in the impacted area, and it still involves the stress fracture that Berrios has been dealing with. The manager also mentioned how “loose bodies” are a part of the issue, as Berrios is heavily involved in the decision-making regarding whether surgery will be the plan of action.

“He’s just trying to make the best decision for now and for the long term,” Schneider said. “He’s back and forth a little bit on it, I think, and just wants to get it right.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen if Berrios gets surgery for the elbow issue and if he will return for the 2026 season, which is no doubt a frustrating sentiment for the pitcher and fans alike, as the 31-year-old has been dependable.

With Toronto dealing with other injuries, the team currently has a 19-24 record, which puts them fourth in the AL East. The Blue Jays start a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
