Blue Jays’ John Schneider takes firm stance on controversial call that got him ejected

There weren’t too many things that went the Toronto Blue Jays’ way on Tuesday in their 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. This latest defeat was their seventh in 11 outings this season thus far, and they haven’t exactly been off to the hot start one would expect from a team that is raring to avenge its World Series defeat to the Dodgers.

In the fifth inning, the Blue Jays’ frustrations bubbled over to the surface when manager John Schneider got himself ejected for arguing a balk call on Kevin Gausman. Gausman used a bit of a stutter step before he threw the first pitch of the at-bat to Alex Freeland, and the home plate umpire decided that he hadn’t pulled off a legal move, allowing the Dodgers’ runner at first to advance.

Schneider went out of the dugout and made his case to home plate umpire Dan Merzel, who was hearing none of it from the Blue Jays manager. Merzel even thought that Schneider’s complaints had gotten incessant enough to the point of sending him early to the locker room — eliciting an even more violent reaction from the Blue Jays skipper.

After the game, Schneider stood by his decision to confront the umpire.

“Definitely was not a balk. I’m not gonna move off of that,” Schneider said, per Mitch Bannon of The Athletic. “Felt kind of nice to get a little frustration out.”

Gausman also noted that what he did was well within what the confines of the sport allowed.

“It was a slide step, and I think it just threw him off, because it was the first time I did it all night,” Gausman said.

The Blue Jays have one more game against the Dodgers tomorrow night, and their goal will be to not get swept by the very team they lost to in the 2025 World Series.
