Blue Jays’ Dylan Cease receives massive injury update after rehab start
The Toronto Blue Jays are seeing help on the horizon for their starting rotation, with right-hander Dylan Cease trending toward an imminent return following his latest rehab outing.
Cease completed a Triple-A Buffalo rehab start on Thursday, throwing 75 pitches (50 strikes) over four innings. He allowed five runs in the appearance but still reached 97 mph with his fastball and struck out six batters. He also gave up two home runs in the second and third innings during the outing. After the game, Cease reportedly felt good and has already rejoined the Blue Jays in Toronto.
The 30-year-old pitcher is now very likely to return without needing another rehab appearance. He is expected to be activated during next week’s series against the Philadelphia Phillies, with Tuesday as the earliest possible return date, which is the middle game of the three-game set.
Cease last pitched for the Blue Jays on May 24 before being placed on the 15-day injured list on May 25 due to a left hamstring strain. The injury occurred during a start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, when he appeared to react after a pitch to Spencer Horwitz and was later removed mid at-bat against Brandon Lowe after initially trying to continue.
Before his injury, Cease had recorded a 3.05 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and a 92:26 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 62 innings across 11 starts.
Additional rotation help may also be on the way for the Toronto. Max Scherzer is scheduled to pitch in Buffalo, while Shane Bieber is also progressing in his rehab assignments, potentially bringing the Blue Jays closer to a full rotation. Catcher Alejandro Kirk is also continuing his rehab assignment and is expected to return in the coming weeks.
