Blue Jays bring back Shohei Ohtani complaint from World Series

On Wednesday, the Toronto Blue Jays got back into the win column with a narrow home win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in a rematch of last year’s World Series. On the mound for Los Angeles was superstar Shohei Ohtani, who allowed four hits and four walks in a tough performance through five innings.

At one point during the game, Blue Jays star George Springer could be seen approaching the umpires and asking about the extra time they afforded Ohtani to warm up between innings, seemingly due to the fact that he was also in the Dodgers’ hitting order, not giving him much of a break. The umpires went so far as to reset the pitching clock for Ohtani in order to give him more time.

Notably, this complaint was also raised by the Blue Jays during the World Series last year during Game 7, when manager John Schneider approached the umpires about Ohtani’s extended warm up time.

After the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts weighed in on the controversy.

“I think they were a little frustrated about how long Shohei takes in between innings,” Roberts said, per Sportsnet. “But if he’s on the bases, there’s got to be some grace, which the umpires are trying to give him… Yeah, if you’re on the other side, you’re trying to rush him as much as possible and treat him like any other pitcher. But the truth is that he’s different, but I understand their gripe.”

It’s certainly understandable that the Blue Jays would be opposed to Ohtani receiving more time than everyone else in the league to get himself situated, regardless of whether or not he is playing on offense as well.

Thankfully for Toronto, they still got the win.
