Keys to Blazers vs. Spurs Matchup
The San Antonio Spurs were their usual, dominant selves against the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1, holding their opponents under 100 points, leading in the rebounding totals, and posting six steals and five blocks around the rim. Blazers’ Deni Avdija continued his hot start to the postseason with 30 point and 10 rebounds, but only three other Blazers’ scored double-digits as Scoot Henderson (18), Shaedon Sharpe (10) and Robert Williams III (11) struggled from the floor. The Spurs have been giving opponents similar issues all season as the Blazers widely struggled to penetrate the paint and find points around the rim.
While the MVP award is for the regular season, voters are certainly seeing the effect Victor Wembanyama is having on this series thus far. He went a scary 5-6 from beyond the arc in one of his better shooting displays of the season, adding to his impressive 35-point total. Julian Champagnie saw a full 30 minutes and made his greatest contribution on the defensive end with three steals, proving this Spurs team is infinitely deep with capable defenders guarding every position.
Still, the Blazers have to be happy seeing Scoot Henderson offer solid production as he can be the spark plug that helps them limit their deficits. Of all starters, Henderson had the lowest (+/-) at -3, showing that he was making the smart plays despite their limited scoring output. They’ll still need players like Jerami Grant (5 pts) and Donovan Clingan (4 pts) to be much more effective in scoring if they want to keep up with the No. 3 overall-ranked offense in the league.
While the Trail Blazers should be able to offer a better scoring night than the 26% they shot from three in Game 1, the Spurs offer very pesky perimeter defense and do a great job of closing out shooters behind the arc. With Wembanyama manning the paint and leaking out to the line, expect Portland to struggle early until they can figure a way around the Spurs’ defense. Watch for Stephon Castle to have a bounce-back game from three as he went 1-5 in Game 1.
Blazers vs. Spurs Prediction and Pick
The Spurs come into Game 2 as 12-point favorites once again as things are looking bleak for the Portland Trail Blazers. They were out-worked by San Antonio in the hustle stats during Game 1 and once the Spurs have a head of steam at home, they’re extremely tough to overcome with the crowd support behind them.
Expect Jrue Holiday and Donovan Clingan to both have a better game this time around, but this should be all Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs for a second-straight game. They’re too aggressive on defense for Portland to have answers and they should be able to cover the spread while the total hits over thanks to an improved night from the Blazers.
Final Blazers-Spurs Game 2 Prediction & Pick: San Antonio Spurs -11.5 (-105); OVER 219.5 (-112)
