Blake Snell gets initial Dodgers return timeline from elbow surgery

The Los Angeles Dodgers will feature new faces on the mound effective Monday. Eric Lauer arrived via Sunday trade while Jonathan Hernandez signed nearly 24 hours later. But a familiar face is closing in on returning: Blake Snell.

MLB insider and columnist for USA Today Bob Nightengale provided an update on Snell’s comeback from his MLB Injury.

“Dodgers starter Blake Snell will undergo the same arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to remove loose bodies in his elbow that Tigers ace Tarik Skubal recently underwent, GM [general manager] Brandon Gomes tells LA reporters, with hopes he returns within two months,” Nightengale posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.

Snell planned for surgery anyway. This decision became formalized before LA took on the Anaheim Angels. Still, manager Dave Roberts and the team needed to operate without the two-time Cy Young winner. Snell could return by July around the MLB All-Star Break.

But the Dodgers chose to boost the depth in the pitching room in response to Snell’s surgery. The Lauer deal with the Toronto Blue Jays came with cash considerations. Hernandez arrived after choosing to opt out of his original Phillies contract.

Of course the defending World Series champs needed to create room for both. And it involved more than placing Snell on the injured list.

Right-hander Brusdar Graterol transferred to the IL as well to clear room for Lauer. Chayce McDermott became optioned while Ben Casparius moved to IL in order to make room for Hernandez.

Both Lauer and Hernandez bring World Series experience in tow. But the latter owns a previous ring with the 2023 Texas Rangers.
