Birmingham v Middlesbrough prediction

Middlesbrough will make the long trip down to the West Midlands as favourites for victory tonight as they look to close the gap on league leaders Coventry in the battle for automatic promotion as well as the Championship table.

Kim Hellberg’s side currently sit eight points behind the Championship leaders, a gap which they’ll be looking to cut to five, but will be equally hopeful of extending the narrow lead they have over the chasing pack for the top two places, with three points between second and fifth.

Boro don’t make the trip to Birmingham in the strongest of form having not won any of their three matches since they reached the summit of the Championship table three weeks ago following a run of six consecutive league victories.

Since reaching the top of the second tier for the first time since October though, the Yorkshire side have picked up just two points from their last three games, starting with a defeat at Coventry followed by disappointing draws against Oxford and Leicester sides each in the relegation zone.

Boro now suddenly have eight points to make up to gain ground on the Sky Blues at the top of the second tier standings, and will be hoping to make up three of them with victory at St Andrew’s tonight.

Birmingham also head into tonight’s crunch Championship match having hit slight bump in their road in terms of their recent form, having won just one of their last four matches, and losing two of their last three in all competitions.

Chris Davies’ side had gone eight matches unbeaten prior to their current run, with their impressive win at Norwich just over a week ago even lifting them as high as seventh in the table, before a 3-0 loss at Millwall last week saw them lose ground on the play off hunt.

The Blues will start tonight in 11th place in the Championship table, but know that victory tonight would not only put out a statement of intent to the rest of the play-off hunters, but also into eighth place, with a five point gap between themselves and sixth placed Wrexham.

The West Midlands side do have an impressive record in front of their home fans though, having lost only once at St Andrew’s in the league all season, though have won only two of their last eight at home in all competitions after a penalty shoot out defeat to Leeds in the FA Cup in their last home outing.

Middlesbrough have won their last six matches against Birmingham but with both sides struggling for form of late it’s proving to be a difficult match to predict, and for the same reason, each side will fancy their chances at taking all three points against strong but potentially vulnerable opponents.

Both sides have been making a habit of playing out stalemates in recent weeks and it doesn’t look like either of those runs will come to an end tonight – a 1-1 draw perhaps the most likely outcome.

Birmingham v Middlesbrough betting tips

Stalemate specialists strike even

Middlesbrough make the trip to the West Midlands tonight having drawn each of their last two matches, while five of Birmingham’s last seven home games have also ended all even.

Neither side are in a particularly strong run of form so it seems unlikely the current trend is to change tonight.

Morgan on the money again

Middlesbrough winger Morgan Whittaker has scored more goals than any other player on either team ahead of tonight’s clash at St Andrew’s, with 11 goals for the campaign in all competitions.

Stansfield sanctioned

No player on either team has been on the receiving end of more yellow cards than Birmingham forward Jay Stansfield, picking up three bookings in his last seven league matches to take his tally to nine for the campaign in all competitions.
